New Bedford Whaling Museum
The mission of the New Bedford Whaling Museum is to educate and interest all the public in the historic interaction worldwide of humans with whales; in the history of Old Dartmouth and adjacent communities; and in regional maritime activities.
To accomplish this mission, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, also known as the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, shall: collect, preserve and interpret the artifacts and documentary evidence of these endeavors; maintain a whaling, maritime and local history museum; maintain a library; promote and disseminate historical research; and accept, maintain, and hold historic sites where appropriate. This will be accomplished under the standards of collections management as endorsed by the American Association of Museums. The museum is the centerpiece of the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park.
